Starting something new can feel daunting, especially when it’s about something as personal as parenting. If you’re considering coaching but feel nervous or unsure, this article will help clarify.
A common question we hear is: “What actually happens in a parent coaching session?”
This article will walk you through exactly what to expect in your first parent coaching session, how the process works, and how we build a personalised plan to help your family thrive.
You’ll finish feeling informed, empowered, and ready to take that first step.
Before the First Session: The Free Consultation and Background Form
Your parent coaching journey begins with a free consultation—a no-pressure, friendly chat to talk about your family’s challenges and see if we’re a good fit to work together. You’ll have the opportunity to share what’s been going on, ask questions, and get a feel for how coaching works.
If you decide to move forward, I’ll then send you a background form to complete. This form includes a series of questions that help paint a full picture of your family dynamics, routines, and the issues you’re currently facing. It’s a key part of the process because often, the main challenge parents come to me for is just the tip of the iceberg.
By looking more deeply, we often uncover other contributing factors that may be getting in the way; things like sibling tensions, inconsistent boundaries, or struggles with emotional regulation.
Designing Your Bespoke Parent Coaching Program
Once I’ve reviewed your background form in detail, I use that insight to design your very own bespoke coaching program – a tailored plan focused specifically on your family’s needs.
This plan typically includes:
- 6 x 2-hour coaching sessions
- A 7th bonus session, completely free
- An in-depth focus on the skills and techniques that will make the biggest difference
- Flexibility to adapt as your needs evolve
- Email support between sessions
The goal is to equip you with practical tools and approaches you can confidently apply at home, creating real, lasting change in your family life.
Your First Parent Coaching Session: What Happens
When we meet for your first official coaching session, here’s what to expect:
✅ Review of Your Background Form
We’ll go through the key insights from your form together, discussing patterns, pain points, and anything you’d like to add or clarify.
✅ Overview of Your Bespoke Coaching Program
I’ll walk you through the main focus areas I’ve identified and the structure of your personalised coaching journey. This gives you a clear roadmap of what we’ll cover and why.
✅ Foundational Parenting Skills
We’ll begin exploring some core parenting skills that form the foundation of everything else—skills like positive communication and emotional support. These are the building blocks we’ll work on in later sessions.
✅ Interactive and Supportive Space
You can ask questions, share examples from your day-to-day, and reflect on what’s resonating. Coaching is a two-way conversation—it’s about finding what works for you and aims to empower you with the right practical tools to apply straight away.
How You’ll Feel After the First Session
Most parents leave the first session feeling a sense of relief and direction.
You’ll have:
- A clear plan forward
- A child behaviour specialist who understands your unique situation
- Practical strategies to start using right away
- The reassurance that you’re not doing this alone
This session sets the tone for a supportive, collaborative partnership focused on helping your family thrive.
